seventy-three years
on the same hill.
In 1853 John Blair travelled to California, and his brother James followed. Their brother Matthew homesteaded the ground this farm still stands on, and ran the Elk Horn Mill sawmill until a flash flood washed the sawdust pile over him. He was forty-two.
His son — also Matthew Blair — planted many of the apple trees that are still growing on the farm today. Matthew married Pauline Larsen, and their eight children ran Blair Bros. Lumber Co. Their daughter Marion Blair married John Harris, and it was their son Blair Harris who bought the property back from his uncles and aunt, farming pears and apples alongside his brother Bert.
Sisters Jane and Pam Harris run the farm now — the seventh generation to work this ground. The road out front is named after the family that homesteaded it.
